Charge sheet is not a public document

Charge sheet contains the information about the crime, it's happening, the names of the victims, the names of the witnesses, and the names of the accused. Charge sheet contains the documents upon which the prosecution relies for proving the case against the accused. The charge sheet contents all identifications like age, occupation, address of the persons involved in the crime. The personal details of the persons involved in crime cannot be made public.

You can understand what would happen if all this kind of information was made public. It will not help criminal justice in any sense. The documents may be tempered. The witnesses and the victims may be threatened. The accused may be defamed. Therefore, the charge sheet cannot be made a public document. There are a lot of adverse probabilities.

Already there is a law of giving the copy of the charge sheet to the accused free of cost.

Therefore, the Honourable Supreme Court has rightly quoted that the charge sheet is not a public document.
